I have posted a list of all the conditions I could find where probiotics have been tried as a treatment.
If you load the full document, which includes citations) you will find that these two or three bacteria help with xyz condition and these other two bacteria help treat abc condition. The bottom line is that each bacteria helps in the proper digestion of food which in turn produces byproducts our body needs to deal with certain conditions. We all try to eat the 'right' food for our health but few try to keep the right bacteria in their intestions to properly digest the food. Give your body a fighting chance. The more complete the probiotic the more benefit you should recieve.
The recommended dosage for those under 60 is 15 billion cultures per day and for over 60 it is 30 billion cultures a day.
IMPORTANT NOTE - Do NOT take probiotics when taking antibiotics. Yes it will help with digestion and diarrhea BUT the antibiotics will be depleted killing the probiotics and will weaken its effect on the infestion. Also, because the antibiotics will kill many/most of the bacteria in your digestive tract it is essential to restart the probiotics as soon as the antibiotics are out of your system. The same is true of the stomach flu or any other condition that causes serious diarrhea. It is important to keep taking the probiotics during that time so to replenish the bacteria lost by dehydration and diarrhea.
I would also not that probiotics have proven very effective against gout, acne vulgaris, asthma and vaginal infections and in particular it is good at reducing reoccurance of these infections (there is a special blend of probiotics for this).
