I see hot weather everywhere. Glad Fishinghat's air conditioner is fixed. TNF don't know how you do get through the summers in FL. I'll be there soon and I'm truly hoping it isn't in the 100's.
On Memorial weekend we hit 104 and it was hot.
Praying for you TNF as you have those memories of your loving daughter....

Gail, benadryl is an antihistamine, to the best of my knowledge (and some actual research), it has no blood-thinning properties / action. But FH will know for sure.
Why do you ask? Is it because of the upcoming surgery? Did they give you instructions that say "no blood-thinners" ?
If that's it, I think you're ok to take it to tame The Bear ...

just the opposite, I believe antihistamines cannot be used for at least seven days before surgery. I do believe it is only tylenol. Unless, you have a benzo or something like that, and it is prescribed for you, you could possibly use that.

Folded twice
Ah FN, that bear is so cute! Made me laugh.
Right, no blood thinners before surgery. Day 3 with my companion, not as cute as yours, Benadryl for 3 days to tame the bear that is getting my mind all over the place.
Sure glad that it's not blood thinning. Thanks Fivenotions!
Make sure the antihistamine is not in your system at least seven days prior to surgery. Not sure if it's a blood thinner or not, although it should definitely be avoided at least 7 days prior or more to surgery. I'm unable to have tylenol only before any epidural shot. Therefore I sure hope you consult your physician on this Gail, please......

necessary tools
Gail, FN, tnf......all of you are wonderful here and supporting each other so well. As I have been unable to go to church for a while (our pews are solid wood and it's very painful on my upper shoulders and neck. My priest understand, and I have a daily reading which was advised to get until I can return to weekly mass.
Bears, monsters, their relatives, need special prayers so they can their way back home and stay put.

I found one drs website where the physicians were having a discussion on use of antihistamines before surgery. Some say none a week before surgery some say it doesn't matter and most said stop them 2-3 days before surgery. I then found several research articles where Benadryl (diphenhydramine) was used along with anaethesia to lessen the mount of anaethesia used. Apparently fairly common in certain surgeries. Also, most drs have you stop all benzos at least 48 before surgery as they can be used as anaestetics and were in the old days. Matter of fact one of the most the most common anaesthetics used these days is Verset (a benzo). Please forgive the spelling errors I just didn't feel good enough to go back and fix them.
Have a good might all.

not sure Fishinghat about why antihistamines cannot be taken before any of my epidurals. It's on my list of 'no no's" That's true no benzos about 48hours prior to surgery. Sure hope gail calls her doctors office to check this out before her surgery........

As you know Carleeta, I take hydroxyzine, an antihistamine, for anxiety. Some drs say it makes no difference and others have said stop it 8 hours before surgery (which is weird when it has a 12 hour half-life, lol). Until I did some reading I didn't know that there are some surgeries that us Benadryl regularly. Many drs keep it handy incase of an allergic reaction during surgery. Weird. Drs are strange and definitely inconsistent. But after all they are god. (He said sarcastically).

I'm not sure myself Gail. Did your surgeon give you a typed list of what you can not take prior to this surgery? Don't panic yet because it's not a blood thinner. I checked with a nurse from my doctor's office this morning (as she was my parents neighbor). In my case with the epidural injection requires a dye and for me it's best not to have any antihistamines like Benadrayl because they need to know if an allergic reaction might happen, therefore if it does, they will administer something. It's their policy. So Fishinghat, I do see why I'm not allowed to have it. Now i also am allowed to have my valium prior to these injections because of the calming effect it gives me and I'm not being put out. My opinion is this all depends on the type of surgery and your surgeon.
Either way gail, do not panic. Nothing bad will happen and just let your doctor know your concern and the worse case scenario here would be they delay a fews hours or a day of your surgical procedure. Please don't panic....

By myself
And what a mess I am in. Freaking out.
Tomorrow I am having pre op blood tests and seeing a nurse. They will tell me. About benzos and antihistamine. I could not function without the Benadryl at this point in time. And I am down to 1 mg daily of Valium, amounts to almost nothing.
Something so unusual happened yesterday, a small shiny rock appeared in the living room. Not mine, and no one comes here. I will take this as a sign from God.
Wonderful concerning the rock. I do believe the shiny rock was sent to you. The great thing is you will be speaking with your nurse tomorrow for the pre op....she'll definitley let you know about the benzo and the benadryl.. (excuse my spelling}

Really cool, Gail! It is truly amazing and I believe that you are being told from "up above" to not worry - you will be fine!
Max is so concerned about you and hasn't called because he knows about your anxiety... He did want me to tell you "Je t'aime)
He asks about you daily
