tired again

Dogs mouths have one of the highest bacterial content of mammals. Blood poisoning is common. watch for a red streak developing down the inside of the thumb. If at anytime you see this streak or have pain spreading down into the palm go to the ER right away as blood poisoning can spread rapidly. Soak thumb in warm water and keep bite area coated with a triple antibiotic ointment like polysporin and use a bandaide to protect from dirt.

I accidentally pricked my finger on my partial plate about 10 years ago and developed the red streak within 24 hours and went to the ER. Dr. said human mouths are very heavy with bacteria (only dog is worse/per the dr.). That treat numerous cases each year in mothers who have been bitten by teething or ill mannered infants.

Has your dog have rabies shots?  My brother and I raised hunting dogs got many years and that is very unusual behavior for a beagle. I would take him to the vet. Many conditions can cause irritability in dogs which will cause them to lash out.

again concerned

PLEASE READ IMMEDIATELY TFL

"While most dog bite infections are successfully treated at home, recent studies have shown that animal bites are the cause of nearly 334,000 emergency room visits each year, about 1% of all emergency visits nationwide. Some dog bites may not lead to anything serious, but because there are risk factors for life-threatening infection, it is important to recognize the most common dog bite infections and how to identify them."

concerned too

Thanks for all the info, FH...

The swelling seems to be going down now and the nite after I was bitten, I soaked it in hot water and epsom salt.  The bite was in the middle joint of the thumb and did bleed.

The crazy dog is somewhat mental, as he has a thing about people standing at the front door.  I no longer open the door but go through the garage because whenever I would open the door he would bite me.  This has happened many, many times during the course of his life and I have scars on my arms to prove it!  Once I had to have stitches.  He has not bitten me in about a year now, but he seems to lose his head at times...

He was my daughter's dog and usually well-behaved and very loving.  Don't know what causes this action.

He is up to date w/his shots (Aug) and is a Yorkie - he just turned 14 and is the one with the congestive heart failure and is on meds

too concerned

I guess I worry too much. You did the right thing, esp the Epsom salts. I am glad it is improving. You gave me a scare.

Lottery fear

I get scared when I purchase a lottery ticket.

Now, I settle for the two millions and less ticket. Less expensive and less stressful.

Fear gone when ticket is only $2!

How is Max, Gail?  Is he staying warm?  It will be in mid 60's this week, but I'm sure that is much warmer than there!

gone today!

FH, thanks for the mylanta tip! gotta try it. i know they don't have capsaicin in them, but i hope it works for jalapenos and habeneros too - i gotta be careful after cutting them up as well!

our household also love hot peppers - especially cayenne/red pepper - as long as they have lots of flavor as well. not hot for hot's sake - but hot is good. i think it brings the flavor out.

thanks for the props you guys, it means a lot. i've been doing lots of job research and updating my resume - connecting with my "network" as a result i am on the computer more often these days - which makes it easier to catch up when i take a break. i love being able to offer others the support i received when i as at my worst (and still do)

gail, you deserve some warm tea and a hot bath filled with lavender. but if you want to make that a glass of wine and a hot bath, go for it! just don't forget the lavender
